In 1907, musicologist Dr. Lily Penleric (Janet McTeer) is at a career crossroads. Her sister invites her to come for a stay in the Appalachian Mountains. Once there, Lily becomes deeply involved with the community, and begins to record the local folksongs. Her view of life evolves as she learns that her sister is in a lesbian relationship, and as she falls in love with fellow music lover (Aidan Quinn).
